The performance graph of an organization is known by its leader. Its success or failure depends on the attributes, approaches, problem solving techniques and degree of influence on subordinates of the context, all managers must possess the quality of a positive leader so that their employees can function efficiently and effectively in an open environment of mutual trust. The behavior, attitude and performance of employees depend on the quality of leadership. In the present competitive environment leadership assume greater importance and responsibility because he has to develop confidence and moral in his juniors.

Leadership either can be acquired by position or developed by virtue. As a manager you have to decide in which category you would like to fall. You will find plenty of leaders by position but very less by virtue. Acquiring leadership by position and then by developing yourself as a person of influence by personal qualities leaving behind the influence of position is a real leader on an organization. Mere leadership by position can get the work done from employees in an authoritative way but you can’t command respect from subordinates. Leadership by virtue influence group behavior without making any emotional disturbance among employees. Formal leadership has authority only while leadership combined with authority and influence can be said as a desired attribute of successful leader. You must have witnessed in many organization where mere presence of the leader influence the subordinates to work voluntarily and effectively.

There are many attributes associated with successful leadership. One of them which is primarily associated is trust. When the trust is shattered, it is bound to have serious adverse affect on the moral of employees and organization. Honesty and integrity are two other essential ingredients to be consistently associated with leadership. When employees trust his leader, they are willing to be vulnerable to his action. The employees will also have that confidence that their rights and interest are fully protected. If, as a manager leader you are not found trustworthy by your subordinates, you can’t be successful in any assignment. Honesty ranks at the top of the most subordinate’s list of characteristics they admire in their boss. Subordinates will only be willing to follow you when they are assured that the person is worthy of their trust. In other words successful leader in an organization is a person of influence and word ‘influence’ can be spelled as a person who (1) HAS INTEGRITY WITH PEOPLE (2) NURTURES SUBORDINATES (3) FAITH IN PEOPLE (4) LISTEN TO EMPLOYEES (5) UNDERSTANDS THEM (6) ENLARGES THEM (7) NAVIGATES FOR EMPLOYEES (8) CONNECTS WITH EACH OTHER & (9) EMPOWERS THEM.

It is evidently found that successful CEOs also demonstrate their EI (Emotional Intelligence) by exhibiting following key components:

  • Self-motivation : Exhibited by a strong drive to achieve, optimism and high organizational commitment.
  • Empathy: Exhibited by expertise in building and retaining talent, cross-cultural sensitivity.

  • Maintain a positive attitude .

    No one respects a grumpy or negative person. With a positive attitude you are looking at the bright side of life. People are naturally attracted to you when you have a positive attitude. By being positive, you will be surrounded by other positive people. You will also magically attract people around you.

  • Know and utilize your strengths.

    You have unique gifts that you were born with and personal strengths you have developed over your lifetime. Realizing and utilizing these strengths will assist you in being an effective leader.

  • Lead others with inclusiveness and compassion .

    The greatest leaders are those who include everyone in their sphere of influence by recognizing each person’s greatest value. To be one of these leaders, look beyond the obvious and see others with insight and compassion.

  • Act according to your morals and values .

    Making choices and taking actions in accordance with your morals and values leaves you with a nagging bad feeling. This feeling seeping in from your subconscious mind hinders your success in your career. On the other hand, making choices and taking actions aligned with your morals and values helps you succeed almost effortlessly. People sense integrity and will naturally respect your opinion and leadership.

  • Continue to educate and improve self.

    Great leaders continue to improve themselves in every possible way. The person who thinks, he is an expert, has a lot more to learn. Never stop learning. Be respective to everyone’s perceptions and information from the teams.

    What do you stand for? What is your objective? Why and how do you want to influence others? How do you want to contribute to yourself and the organization, you work for?   • Set definitive goals and follow concrete action plans.

    You have to know where your destination id before you can map out a plan to get there. To improve your leadership skills, first set specific life goals with appropriate time lines. Design your goals by moving backwards from the end of your life to the present week.

    Then, formulate action plans you can commit to that will get you to where you want to be.

  • Learn from your mistakes.

    The most successful leaders know that the key to success is not in avoiding falling or failing, but in learning from the mistakes. As a strong leader, you will also be able to communicate your weakness to your team, so that you and your team can appoint someone who excels at that particular task or activity.

  • Motivate others to get their best.

    A leader is as powerful as his team. As a leader, you will want to surround yourself with a powerful team by assisting others in recognizing and utilizing their strengths and potential.

    Motivating others to their own greatness will improve the group energy, increase the vitality of your assignments and move you forward toward achieving your goal .

  • Improve communication skills.

    Having great leadership skills includes your being able to clearly and specifically communicate your vision, goals, skills, intentions and expectations to your subordinates and peers. This also include your ability to listen to what other people are consciously or unconsciously communicating. To become a great communicator, continually strive to improve your verbal, nonverbal and listening skills .

 
What’s important in leadership is refining your skills. All great leaders keep working on themselves until they become effective. Here are some specifics:
 
  • Learn to be strong but not rude.

    It is an extra step you must take to become a powerful, capable leader with a wide range of reach. Some people mistake rudeness for strength. It’s not even a good substitute.

  • Learn to be kind but not weak.

    We must not mistake kindness for weakness. Kindness isn’t weakness. It is a type of strength. We must be kind enough to tell somebody the truth and considerate enough to lay it on the line, tell it like it is and not deal in delusion.

  • Learn to be bold but not a bully.

    It takes boldness to win the day. To build your influence, you’ve got to walk in front of your group and be willing to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem and discover the first sign of trouble.

  • Learn to be humble but not timid.

    You can’t get to high life by being timid. Some people mistake timidity for humility. Humility is almost a God-like word. A sense of awe. An awareness of the human soul and spirit. Humility is a grasp of the distance between us and the stars, yet having the feeling that we’re part of stars. So humility is virtue; but timidity is a disease. Timidity is an affliction. It can be cured, but is a problem.

  • Be proud but not arrogant

    It takes pride to win the day and build your ambition. It takes pride in community. It takes pride in cause, in accomplishment. But the key to becoming a leader is being proud without being arrogant. In fact I believe the worst kind of arrogance is arrogance from ignorance. It’s when you don’t know that you don’t know. Now that kind of arrogance is intolerable. If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant and arrogant, that’s just too much to take.

  • Develop humor without folly

    That’s important for a leader. In leadership, we learn that it’s okay to be witty, but not silly. It’s okay to be fun, but not foolish.

  • Deal in realities.

    Just accept life like it is. Life is unique. It’s fascinating. And I’ve found that the skills that work well for one leader may not work at all for another. But the fundamental skills of leadership can be adapted to work well for just about everyone at work, in the community and at home.
